What to keep in a home document vault, and why

Home paperwork piles up for years. The day you need one page, you need to find it in a minute.

Which home documents are worth keeping

Start with the documents that prove ownership and condition: the deed, title insurance, survey, closing documents, inspection reports, permits and certificates of occupancy. Add insurance policies, appliance manuals, warranties, contractor agreements, HOA documents and property tax records.

Keep records of what you paid for the home and for improvements for as long as you own it. A tax professional can tell you how long to keep them after you sell.

Tag it so it can be found

A folder called Misc is where documents go to disappear. In Steadwell each document gets a category, a description, an optional expiry date, and a link to the asset or room it belongs to, so the dishwasher manual lives with the dishwasher.

Search runs across your documents, so you can find the permit by typing the word on it.

Scan paper once, then keep the paper or recycle it

Use your phone camera to scan a paper document, or upload a PDF, JPG, PNG, HEIC or Word file up to 50 MB. The vault is private to your account and available from any phone, tablet or computer.

Photos, receipts and documents share one storage total: 250 MB on Free, 10 GB on Plus and 50 GB on Pro.

Steadwell compared with a filing cabinet or cloud folder

Generic storage holds files. A home vault knows what they are for.
