What a spike is trying to tell you

A jump in a bill is often the first visible sign of a problem. Steadwell flags it; here is where to look.

Water or sewer

A bill that climbs without a change in habits can point to a running toilet, a slow leak, or an irrigation zone stuck on.

Electric

A summer spike can mean the air conditioner is working harder than it should, from a dirty coil or low refrigerant to a unit nearing the end of its life.

Gas

A winter jump can mean a furnace losing efficiency, or drafts and thin insulation letting heat escape.

When a bill points at a system, schedule the follow-up with the maintenance tracker, or take photos and get a condition assessment of the unit that is working hardest.

How it works

From first bill to a clear picture in a few minutes.

01
Add your utilities
Pick electric, gas, water, internet or trash, add the provider, and you are set. Each property keeps its own list.
02
Log each bill
Scan it, forward it, or type it in. Amount, date and usage are saved with the bill.
03
Watch the trend
See your last bill, six-month average, year-to-date total and a bar chart of recent months for each utility.
04
Get warned about spikes
When a bill jumps more than 40% above your recent average, that utility shows a warning so you can look into it early.

Your true cost to run the house

Utility bills are part of the full picture, not a separate spreadsheet.

Every bill you log appears under Utilities next to your repairs, projects and service visits, and counts toward your yearly and all-time home spend. That is how you see what your home actually costs month to month, not only when something breaks.

Pair it with the expense tracker and 5-year cost forecast to plan for the big replacements as well as the monthly bills.

Common questions

Is utility bill tracking free?
Yes. Adding utilities, logging bills, usage, trends and spike alerts are free on every plan. Scanning a bill with AI needs Plus or Pro. Forwarding a bill by email and typing one in are both free.
Which utilities can I track?
Electric, gas, water, sewer, internet and trash, plus a combined water, sewer and trash type for cities that send one bill, and an Other type for anything else, such as propane or a security service. Each one has its own provider name, optional account number and bill history.
My city sends one bill for water, sewer and trash. Can I track that?
Yes. Add it as a Water, sewer & trash utility and log the total of each bill. To see where the money goes, you can also split a bill into water, sewer, trash, stormwater and other charges. The parts must add up to the total. Steadwell then shows each service's share for the year and works out your water cost per gallon from the water part.
How do I log a bill?
Three ways: scan a photo or PDF of the bill with AI (Plus and Pro), forward the bill email to your Steadwell capture address, or enter the date, amount and usage by hand. Whichever you choose, you review the details before anything is saved.
Does Steadwell connect to my utility company account?
No. Steadwell never asks for your utility login. You add bills by scanning, forwarding or typing, so your account credentials stay with your provider.
How does the spike alert work?
When your latest bill is more than 40% above the average of your recent bills (up to the last six) for that utility, Steadwell shows a warning on that utility with the percentage. It is a prompt to look closer, such as for a leak or a struggling system, not a diagnosis.
Can I track usage as well as cost?
Yes. Log usage in kWh for electric, therms for gas, gallons for water or CCF for sewer next to each bill, so you can tell a price increase from a real change in how much you use.
Do utility bills count toward my total home costs?
Yes. Bills appear under a Utilities category alongside your repairs, projects and service visits, and they roll into your yearly and all-time home spend in the Money tab.
Can I track utilities for more than one home?
Each property keeps its own utilities and bills. The Pro plan supports up to three properties.
