How insurance tracking works
Know your home insurance before you need it
A claim is the worst time to start looking for a policy number or wondering what is covered.
What to keep for every home insurance policy
Keep the insurer, policy number, your agent's name and phone, the annual premium, the deductible and the renewal date together. Add your coverage amounts: dwelling, personal property, liability, loss of use, medical payments and additional structures.
If you also carry flood, umbrella or another policy, track each one separately so the renewal dates do not blur together.
Your declarations page does the typing for you
The declarations page is the summary at the front of your policy packet. It lists who insures you, what is covered and for how much. Upload its first pages and Steadwell reads the company, policy number, agent, coverage amounts, deductible and renewal date for you to review and save.
Scanning is part of Plus and Pro. Entering the same details by hand is free.
Review your coverage every year
Rebuilding costs change, and so does your house. A kitchen remodel, a finished basement or a new roof can leave your coverage behind. Steadwell reminds you 30 days before a policy renews and prompts a yearly coverage check-in, so you have time to compare quotes and adjust coverage before the policy renews itself.
If you do file a claim, log it with the date, type, amount and outcome. That record is useful for the next claim and the next renewal.
Steadwell compared with a folder of paperwork
Most people find their policy by searching their email.
| Folder, drawer or email search | Steadwell | |
|---|---|---|
| Finding the policy number | Dig through paper or old emails. | One screen with company, number and agent. |
| Renewal date | Often a surprise. | Reminder 30 days before renewal. |
| Coverage amounts | Buried in the declarations page. | Listed by coverage type, with a history of changes. |
| Claims | Notes on whatever was nearby. | A claims log with dates, amounts and outcomes. |
| Related records | Stored somewhere else. | Keep the policy PDF in the Document Vault next to your deed and permits. |
